Horse Boarding: Legal Rights and Responsibilities
At Equine Legal Solutions, we receive a lot of calls from horse owners AND boarding stables that are unhappy with a boarding situation and want to know what their legal rights are. Most states don't have specific laws governing horse boarding (other than animal cruelty and local zoning regulations), so horse boarding relationships are covered solely by contract, either written or verbal. Smart boarding stable managers can minimize boarding issues by using a clear and definitively written boarding contract. In addition, having prospective boarders fill out a boarding application can further prevent issues by having a clear understanding of the boarder's prior boarding history and any special accommodations they or their horse may have.

Problems with Selling a Horse on Payments

A Parent's Guide to Choosing a Horse for Their Child
Parents who are new to horses often make mistakes when searching for and buying a horse for their child. Best case is that they have a horse that while safe, is not appropriate for a beginning rider and uneducated parents. Worst case, they buy a horse that is dangerous, and their child is either injured or scared to the extent that they don't want to ride anymore. ELS has written A Parent's Guide to Choosing a Horse for Their Child to help parents learn the right way of going about buying a horse for their child. Horse Sale Videos: What You Can't See Might Hurt You!
At Equine Legal Solutions, we hear from a lot of unhappy horse buyers. Many of them bought a horse sight unseen on the basis of sale videos and the seller's representations about the horse. When the horse arrived, it wasn't what the horse buyer thought it would be. Most of the time, the seller refuses to take the horse back or refund any of the dissatisfied horse buyer's money. And often, the buyer can't even resell the horse because it is unsound, unsafe or otherwise not marketable. The cost of going to try a horse in person is often negligible compared to the cost of purchasing and caring for an unsuitable horse. Here are six things you can't tell from a horse sale video.
Don't Get Taken for a Ride: Horse Sale Fraud Warning Signs
Dishonest and unlawful sale practices permeate every level in the horse industry, from $500 horses at the local feedlot auction to private sales of Olympic-level horses. Horse sale fraud is so rampant that shopping for a used car seems practically risk-free by comparison. Although clever fraudsters can dupe even experienced equine professionals, non-horsey parents buying a horse for their child and first-time horse buyers are particularly vulnerable. Here are some warning signs that a horse deal might be shady.
